Flu-Proofing Your Home When the Grandkids Visit

Grandkids bring a lot of joy into the house – and sometimes a few extra germs! Older adults are more likely to develop serious complications from influenza, so a few simple precautions can help keep visits safer during flu season.

Before and during visits:

  • Ask family to postpone visits if a child has a fever, significant cough, vomiting, or is clearly feeling sick.
  • Encourage everyone to wash their hands when they arrive, especially before meals and helping in the kitchen.
  • Keep tissues and hand sanitizer in easy-to-reach places.
  • Wipe down frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, remotes, phones, and bathroom fixtures.
  • Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or bites of food with the grandkids.
  • When possible, improve airflow by opening a window or using an air purifier during gatherings.
  • Stay up to date on your annual flu vaccine and encourage family members to do the same.

And remember: You don’t have to avoid the grandkids all winter! A few healthy habits, including staying home when someone is sick, can make family visits safer while still enjoying time together.

If you develop flu symptoms, especially fever, cough, body aches, or sudden fatigue, contact your healthcare provider early. Antiviral treatment works best when started promptly and may be especially important for adults age 65 and older.
