What Is Acute Care for Seniors?

At Greater Good Health, our experienced, compassionate care teams can offer personalized solutions to help you recover quickly and safely or help connect you to a higher level of care if you need it. By providing accessible, tailored care when you need it most, we can help you get back to feeling your best. We understand how important independence and mobility are—especially as we age. Additionally, our acute care services are designed to provide a bridge between home-based health and long-term care.

Understanding Acute Care Services

Common Patient Questions

As a new or returning patient, we understand that you may have questions regarding acute care. Keep reading to get the answers to many frequently asked questions.
How do I know when to go to my primary care provider, urgent care, or the emergency room?
When unexpected health concerns come up, knowing where to go to get the medical attention you need can be confusing. It’s important to understand the differences between primary care, urgent care, and emergency care so you can make the right choice for your healthcare needs. Primary care is typically your first stop for routine check-ups, screenings, and non-life threatening illnesses and injuries. If your concern is not life threatening and your primary care provider doesn’t have availability, urgent care is a good option. Urgent care centers typically offer extended hours and same-day appointments. However, if you’re experiencing a medical emergency, you should go straight to the emergency room for immediate medical attention or call 911. It’s always a good idea to establish a relationship with a primary care provider and know the location and hours of nearby urgent care centers and emergency rooms in case of an unexpected medical issue.
Does Medicare cover acute care services?
Yes, Medicare does cover acute care services. Acute care services are medical treatments for severe or short-term illnesses or injuries that require immediate attention. If your acute health concern is non-life threatening and managed by your primary care provider or an urgent care facility, Medicare Part B covers outpatient services, including provider visits and diagnostic tests that may be required during acute care treatment. If a higher level of care is needed, Medicare Part A covers acute care services provided in a hospital setting, including emergency room visits, surgeries, and inpatient stays. It’s important to note that Medicare coverage for acute care services may vary depending on factors such as the specific treatment, the provider’s participation in the Medicare program, and any applicable deductibles or copayments. To determine the exact coverage and costs associated with acute care services, beneficiaries should review their Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or contact the Medicare helpline for assistance. Whether you are a new or existing patient, our Patient Liaison is also available to help review your health coverage and insurance benefits.
Does Medicare Advantage cover acute care services?
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide the same coverage as Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), but often offer additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing services. Medicare Advantage plans typically cover acute care services, which are medical treatments and interventions for severe, sudden, or short-term medical conditions. Acute care services that are covered by Medicare Advantage plans may include visits to primary care providers or urgent care centers, hospital stays, emergency room visits, surgeries, diagnostic tests, and other medically necessary treatments. It’s always a good idea to contact your Medicare Advantage plan directly or review your plan’s documentation to understand the specific coverage and limitations for acute care services. We know that connecting with your health plan can be challenging, which is why our Patient Liaisons offer free, comprehensive assessments to help you better understand and take advantage of your health benefits.
